The Social Contract

Years ago, I was at a conference that likely was sponsored by ASAE but to be honest, the fog of memory clouds my vision. I do remember that it was the early era of online connecting because we were talking about online bulletin boards. Yes, dear reader, there was a bygone era when we didn’t have online communities where we could participate in real time.

Making Peace

Making anything takes effort whether you are making a meal or making furniture. Making peace is a lot harder than it looks and falls into that category of “easier said than done.” When two parties are in serious disagreement, it can feel like a war, full of bad feelings, fighting for influence and resources, and developing a stubbornness from not wanting to yield your position.

Standards of Conduct and Their Importance

The topic of the moment is artificial intelligence (AI) and why we need rules, regulations, and guidelines for its behavior. Debates are happening nearly constantly as experts pick sides (for or against AI) and researchers from both ends of the spectrum make arguments and give examples from their research and experience. Based on what I’ve seen and learned, most commenters think some rules are necessary even if these rules are basic.

Artificial Intelligence is Blinding Us

Back in the 1980s when the world was fun, there was a great song called “She Blinded Me with Science” by Thomas Dolby. It keeps coming to mind when I think about artificial intelligence, avatars, deep fakes, and the frightening trend to abdicate our responsibility as humans for this tool we created and unleashed with little thought for its long-term impact.

The Day After Trinity & Artificial Intelligence

Scientists often chase big changes without considering the consequences of their actions. Living in the “now” of their research and their laboratory, they move forward with a dangerous carelessness about the future impact of what they are doing. The rest of us become hostages to their “vision” as they insist that we just don’t understand as we are too uninformed and unintelligent. Yet, we must suffer the outcomes of their vision.

Who’s the Tool?

Everyone is talking about ChatGPT and how it's going to change the world and maybe even break capitalism. Being from Missouri, I have to say I'm a skeptic. Lots of new tools come along and we think it's the best thing since sliced bread or Betty White, depending on your opinion. I like to take my time getting to learn about new tools and products to see what they do and if they actually are going to make things easier or better. This does not make me a Luddite -- it just makes me a person who's had some experience in life.

COMMENTARY: Is Boston University the new Dr. Frankenstein?

It’s a bit early for Halloween but when the news headlines are filled with horror, it’s a motivator to revisit the stories of this scary season and how they still apply today. The news this week has the scariest headline I’ve seen all year: Boston University researchers develop a deadlier version of the COVID virus by combining two strains. Headlines and stories noted that this combined strain has an 80% mortality rate in mice.

COMMENTARY: Lazy Thinking Undermines Everything

Years ago, I realized I was a grown up and had reached a certain level of emotional maturity when I could objectively judge a situation involving a person I do not like. I learned to set aside emotion and evaluate the situation; personal opinions did not apply. It took me years to become a disciplined and objective thinker, and it’s something that we all need to constantly work on and hone.
